ANTHROPOLOGY 1820/Psychology 1820
Evolutionary Psychology
3 credit hours
This team-taught course is an introduction to the new field of Evolutionary Psychology. Evolutionary Psychology
is an approach to understanding human behavior that explored how humans have solved adaptive problems. The focus
will be on the evolution of specific traits that serve as the basis for human drives, instincts, and predispositions
that are related to:
Subsistence; why, for example, do humans like spices and alcohol?
Safety; why, for example, do humans loathe spiders and snakes?
Sex; why, for example, do male athletes have attractive wives?
We will explore the emotional and cognitive basis for these adaptations, the role of culture and language, and the biological basis for these systems.
