Chopsticks

No, this blog post is not about the famous waltz by Euphemia Allen. It is, in fact, about Gong Fu movies.

I saw Kung Fu Panda tonight. I was quite surprised (pleasantly, I might add) when they threw in a chopstick fight scene. It caught me totally off-guard. I have long been a Jackie Chan fan, and I’m quickly coming up in Jet Li fandom, now. Both are excellent and popular martial-artist-actors but no Gong Fu fight scene will ever truly top the chopstick fight scene in Jackie (spelled Jacky back then) Chan’s film, Fearless Hyena — except, perhaps, another chopstick fight scene. There are only two movies I now know of that have chopstick fight scenes in them, though my mom remembers a third — but not by name. I must find it. Chopstick fighting is simply my favourite kind of fighting.

A fight scene of this variety being found in a popular big-ticket movie is heartening. I’ve long been speaking the praises of chopstick fight scenes, and trying to figure out ways to get people to sit through all of Fearless Hyena without complaining (I believe the backstory is important, not to mention the build-up it provides), but thanks to Kung Fu Panda, my work just got a little bit easier.

I’m tired, and am unable to think of a way to sufficiently stretch this post out without diluting it as well.

Until Next Time,

Adrian
